Ceramic: These are very common and often composed of materials like alumina, silicon carbide, or boron carbide. Ceramic plates work by shattering the incoming projectile and dissipating its energy. They are generally lighter than steel but can be brittle and may crack after multiple impacts in the same area. They are often backed by a tough material like aramid (Kevlar), fiberglass, or ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) to absorb residual energy and catch fragments (spalling).
